Jerry's Back, Illness, Force Early Exit at AuSable Canoe Marathon
(August 2, 2003) Jerry's back quit on him, and his stomach wouldn't quit on him, at the 120-mile AuSable Canoe Marathon, held on July 27 from Grayling to Oscoda, Michigan. The Evil Geezers ended their race at Loud Dam, about 12 hours into the race, with about another 5 hours left to go. Both of the Old Ones are OK, and will live to fight another day. The following exchange was reported to have been heard between the Geezers at Loud Dam. Jerry: "Sorry, man." Richard: "Wimp."
Evil Geezers Continue to Post Solid Results in 2003
(August 2, 2003) The first half of the season is now over, and the Geezers have continued their winning ways, posting solid results in the events of the first half of the season. Richard laid it all on the line in the 260-mile Texas Water Safari, leading much of the way in the Solo Unlimited division, before the pace took its toll. He took a well-earned second place in Solo Unlimited, finishing in just over 51 hours. Jerry has continued to do well in USCA C-1 races, taking Texas State Championship honors for the third year in a row. Jerry's schedule should start to wind down, as he begins to take in some bike rides around Texas, starting with the Hotter'n Hell Hundred in August. Look for Richard to continue to chase the rabbit at a canoe race near you!
Evil Geezers Place Well in Opening Race of 2003 Season
(March 9, 2003) The Evil Ones took third place overall, first place USCA C-2, in the East Fork West Fork Challenge near Houston. Conditions were perfect for this challenging race, which starts at 4am with a quarter-mile run with the canoe to a narrow creek. The course then winds down to Lake Houston before turning back north on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River. Richard and Jerry briefly held first place after the halfway point, but were overtaken by two faster Unlimited Class boats on the final leg. It's a good start to the season, Richard's back is doing well, and the Geezers are adjusting to their new positions in the boat, having swapped ends, at least for a while.
Evil Geezers Welcome Athlete Octane as Sponsor for 2003 Season
(March 1, 2003) Evil Geezer Racing welcome Ahtlete Octane on board as a product sponsor for the 2003 racing season! Thanks! Jerry has been using Ahtlete Octane since the last half of the the 2002 season with great success. Endurance Labs, maker of Athlete Octane, has come out with a new line of vitamins as well, and those products look every bit as promising. Look for the Athlete Octane logo in the sponsors area on this page to go check out their site.
Richard's Back Healing Well, Jerry Takes Second in San Marcos Solos
(December 14, 2002) Evil Geezer Racing team member Richard Steppe is healing nicely after major back surgery one month ago. He's up and moving around well with very little pain, and attended the San Marcos Solos last weekend. He is very optimistic about starting the season next year in good shape. In other news, Jerry took second at the San Marcos Solos last weekend, paddling the 16.5 mile course in 2:24:35, despite a couple of unscheduled swims in rapids along the course.
Jerry Brown Tops TCRA Paddler of the Year Points Standings
(November 20, 2002) Evil Geezer Racing team member Jerry Brown tops the Texas Canoe Racing Association's Paddler of the Year standings with only one race to go in the season. He will remain in the lead at season's end regardless of the outcome of the season-ending San Marcos Solos, however, assuring him of 2002 Paddler of the Year honors. Jerry will also finish the season leading the honors for TCRA USCA Paddler of the Year.
Evil Geezer Racing Takes Dickinson USCA Honors

(November 16, 2002) Evil Geezer Racing took the top spots in the USCA C-1 and USCA C-2 races at the Dickinson Bayou Brawl, near Houston, this weekend. Jerry Brown took a comfortable victory in C-1, then teamed up with Guest Geezer Colin Grimshaw (Richard Steppe could not race due to back surgery) to win the afternoon C-2 race going away. Jerry was not so lucky in the Dragon Boat race, taking sixth with his four teammates, but he maintains he had an unfair disadvantage because he had one more kid in the boat than anyone else, and one of the kids lost her shoe on the first portage, requiring Jerry to fish around in the mud for it (he never found it, she bravely finished barefoot).
Richard Steppe Undergoes Season-Ending Back Surgery
(November 14, 2002) Evil Geezer Racing team member Richard Steppe ended the season with planned disk-replacement surgery. The surgery went without a hitch, and Richard is recovering at his home. Richard has expressed high hopes for the success of this procedure, and is optimistic it will allow him to compete without the pain he has been suffering for the last few years. Teammate Jerry Brown refers to Richard as his "bionic bowman", and is looking forward to a smooth recovery and more success next year with his partner.
